Program notes

Logo for violin and live electronics was composed in 2013. The name of the composition, Logo, can be thought to refer to its shortish duration of 6 minutes. Logo is my first composition with live electronics. From the point of view instrumentation it is then a kind of premiere of a new genre for me, a starting point for a possible path.

It was very inspiring to compose Logo during Cursus 1, a composition and music technology course at Ircam in Paris. I am grateful for all the Cursus 2012-13 teachers (Éric Daubresse, Jean Lochard, Grégoire Lorieux, Mikhail Malt, Alexander Mihalic, Mauro Lanza), especially my tutor, Grégoire Lorieux. I am thankful for very talented violinist Eun Joo Lee who in three weeks created a unique premiere of Logo.

In the live electronics of Logo, there have been used harmonizer, frequency shift, granulation, filtering, delay, spectral delay, reverb and spatialization (Spat) in Max/MSP program. There is also used sound files which are modified or created with Max/MSP, MicroPlayer, OpenMusic, AudioSculpt, Pro Tools, Spear and Sound Studio. Ircam violin samples and a recording of a tibetan bell were used as raw material for the sound files. Pierre Stordeur, a Cursus colleague, borrowed me his tibetan bell, which he had brought from China, Sichuan province.

In the live electronics of Logo, there are used for example 3/4-tone clusters and 3/4-tone scales. If the violin plays E, from it sometimes the live electronics construct a 3/4-tone cluster or scale (E – F quarter sharp – G – A quarter flat – A sharp – B quarter sharp – C sharp – D quarter sharp – E). In the overtone series, the intervals between 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th overtones, are close to 3/4-tones. This connection between overtone series and 3/4-tone scale have been used in Logo.

Logo has only one written tempo, quarter note being 60, with few rallentandos and accelerandos. Violin textures are mostly comprised of scales, zigzag gestures and arpeggios. From the point of view pitch structure the violin part for example consists of fifths and 3/4-tone scales.
